Las Vegas for Kids

Las Vegas for Kids
By Peter Portero

When many people are considering a family vacation, they don't think of Las Vegas. Many people consider Las Vegas to be a good vacation spot for adults only. However, Las Vegas can also be a great vacation spot for families. Many of the newer as well as a few of the older resorts in Las Vegas offer a wide selection of recreation for the entire family.

One of the best family resorts in Las Vegas is the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The resort offers beaches and a wave pool to keep kids and parents alike entertained. The pool is a large swimming hole that sends out a wave every ninety seconds. Encircling the beach is a river ride where you can float on the many floatation devices available for rent.

The resort also features the Beach Bar & Grill right near the pool that serves great burgers, sandwiches and salads. For nighttime dining, there is the option of the Raffles Caf, which is next to the casino floor and features a wide selection of food on the menu. However, for kids you may decide it is better to visit the Bay Side Buffet.

Mandalay Bay also features the Shark Reef, which is an aquarium that features very exotic sea creatures. The resort also features more than forty stores for those who prefer to shop.

For the parents there is the option of the spa. In addition, Mandalay Bay features very nice rooms that are five hundred square feet with floor-to-ceiling windows and large bathrooms.

Vegas Without Elvis? What Could Be More Impressive...The Hoover Dam Anyone?

Vegas Without Elvis? What Could Be More Impressive...The Hoover Dam Anyone?
By Michael Hanna

Called a 'modern civil engineering wonder of the United States,' the Hoover Dam is one of the most intriguing historic tourist attractions in the US, and a must-see for those planning a trip to Nevada or Arizona. The project, named so in honour of Herbert Hoover's US presidency at the time, as well as for his use of the scheme to create jobs during the Depression, took a total of five years and $47m (inflation adjusted $676m) to build.

Originally sought to be constructed in response to flood endangerment, the project was commissioned in 1922 but began construction only in 1931. It was then found that the banks of the Colorado River Basin would periodically overflow when melted snow ran off the Rocky Mountains, thus taking a toll on a number of farming communities along the way. But, with the construction of the dam, crucial flood control was effectively provided, as was an allowance for irrigated farming in the area. In addition, the dam would contribute to holding a dependable water supply for parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

After the combined work of 8,000 people within seven contracting companies, the dam was finished - two years ahead of schedule. It is an impressive fact, considering that the contractors and engineers faced challenges such as an estimated 120 year settling and curing process for the concrete of the dam. They eventually found that piping refrigerated water through the concrete would speed up the process.

Over 221 meters high and 379 meters long, the dam borders Arizona and Nevada in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River and even bears a clock on each respective side to signify the time difference between the two states. While the original plans for the facade of the dam and power plant consisted of a simple wall of concrete topped with a Gothic balustrade, criticism soon demanded a more remarkable design. Los Angeles based architect, Gordon B. Kaufmann, was brought onto the project to streamline the exterior design. The result was a production of one of the most explicit examples of Art Deco anywhere in the world today.

With eight to ten million visitors to the Hoover Dam each year, not including the traffic that crosses the dam of course, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area is the fifth busiest national park in the United States. But it isn't the only frequented attraction in the area. Las Vegas is only 30 miles Southeast of the Hoover Dam, making it a common act for visitors to stay in Las Vegas and simply drive or take a bus to see the dam. It's a long way to go, but flying in and Hiring a Car is easy enough these days thanks to the power of the web. The drive is about an hour each way, and visitors have the added pleasure of experiencing the hub of the 'city that never sleeps.' The Las Vegas Hilton, a centrally located hotel, often advertises special offers for various times of the year.

It's a historical monument with an attraction for all, a visit would definitely not be anything less than spectacular.

Best Shows in Las Vegas

Best Shows in Las Vegas
By Jason Gluckman

Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital of not only the US, but also the world. Such a wide variety of shows are available here that it often becomes difficult to choose the best show that is right for you. This is also because there are not one or two, but hundreds of shows that feature the best of the business. In fact, the choice or categorization of the best shows also depends on what kind of entertainment you are looking for.

If you are travelling with children, dont forget to take them to some of the great magic shows presented by master magicians here. Often the children sitting among the audience are invited on the stage to assist the magician. Some of the magicians have theatres named after them and they deliver mind-blowing illusions at a very reasonable price.

There are several productions in the city year-round that cater to the demand of those who have a passion for comedy. Some of the best comedians have polished their craft in the lounges of this city, going on to make it big internationally. And if you want to see a world class circus, there is more than one choice for you in Las Vegas.

As far as traditional Las Vegas shows are concerned, some have been running non-stop for a record number of years, with sets worth millions of dollars. And of course, there is no dearth of the best of the best for those who are looking forward to some raunchy adult shows in Sin City.

Las Vegas Hotel Casinos

Las Vegas Hotel Casinos
By Eddie Tobey

Las Vegas is not like any other tourist destination. Its major attractions are not beaches or historical sites but casinos. Gambling became legal in Nevada in 1931, but the first casino didn't open until ten years after that. Throughout the years, casinos have become more sophisticated, and now, hotel casinos are everywhere. There are several Las Vegas hotel casinos in old Las Vegas on Fremont Street and on the Strip, as well as in several surrounding areas.

Las Vegas Hotel Casino Options

For anyone who visits Las Vegas, finding a Las Vegas hotel casino is not a daunting job. MGM Mirage owns most of Las Vegas hotels. The company owns twelve casino resorts, which gives travelers a wide variety. Whether on a tight budget or in a situation where money is no object, the MGM Mirage offers something for everyone.

Aside from MGM Mirage Las Vegas hotels, the Bellagio is another Las Vegas hotel casino that some tourists prefer. This hotel has received a Five-Diamond rating from AAA. Some of the hotel amenities and facilities include bathrooms with soaking tubs, electronic drapes, mini bars, cable television, room service, laundry, dry cleaning, and many others. Suites are usually equipped with two master bedrooms and a living area.

Another option is the New York, New York Casino Resort. This is named as such because the rooms are designed as smaller versions of skyscrapers straight out of New York City. This hotel offers several rooms and suites with living spaces, Jacuzzis, and marble bathrooms.

There are also simpler and more affordable options such as the Railroad Pass Casino Resort or the Boardwalk Casino Resort. These hotels offer comfort and enjoyment but are not tough on the traveler?s budget.

All these Las Vegas hotel casinos have hundreds of gaming tables such as blackjack, roulette, mini baccarat, craps, and poker. Travelers, especially seasoned gamblers, will surely have a great time staying in these hotel casinos.

Where to Spot Celebrities in Las Vegas

Where to Spot Celebrities in Las Vegas
By Bob Johnson

If you want to spot celebrities, theres really only two places to go. But if you don't want to waste your time in LA or NY, then why not try Las Vegas? After all, youve got your basic celebrities singing and telling jokes on stage, your basic celebrities coming to town to gamble, and your basic celebrities coming to make movies and television shows.

And then theres always Paris Hilton checking up on her familys ownings.

When it comes to spotting hot celebs, you can take a chance on hanging out at casinos and waiting for them to drop a bundle at the poker table, or you can do something where youll actually get a chance to see someone famous.

The Palms on Flamingo Road features two clubs well known for attracting the beautiful people. Paris herself prefers the Palms to her namesake hotel and Britney Spears makes it her prerogative to hang out there, too. At the N9NE steakhouse, musicians as varied as Paul Anka and Vince Neil have sung the praises of their porterhouses.

The best place in town to spot celebs, however, is probably the Fix at the Bellagio. Those whove peered through its large windows have been lucky enough to spot Spiderman himself, Tobey Maguire, as well as the king of the world, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Chances are probably not good for spotting famous people at Vegas top landmarks. For one thing, the rich and famous usually make special arrangements to go to public places. And for another, Vegas top landmark is so high that if you look down even the biggest celebrities look like ants. Great big honking fireants, maybe, but ants nonetheless. The Stratosphere tower is not only the tallest structure in Las Vegas, its the tallest building west of the mighty Mississippi River. Much like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, you pretty much cant go anywhere without looking at it. Well, there is one place you can go. Did you know that Balzacor was it Victor Hugohated the Eiffel Tower so much that he used to go there to do his writing because it was the only place in Paris he could find outdoors where he didnt have to look at it. Fortunately, if you dont appreciate the Stratosphere from afar and find yourself forced to go atop it, youll find plenty to occupy your time, including a thrilling roller coaster ride.

The Stratosphere is also a great place to get a view of Americas own fabulous city of lights. The 360 degree view of all that Vegas has to offer really cant be beat, especially at night. However, if you are the athletic type and want to get a view that most other tourists wont get, then try the Calico Tanks Trail. This 2.5 mile hike starts out at the Sandstone Quarry pullout on the Red Rock loop. Upon reaching the far point of the trail, pull out your camera and get ready for a view of Las Vegas that even those up on the Stratosphere tower wont get.
